It is through our hands that we express ourselves artistically, lovingly, and, at times, use them to assist with verbal communication. They allow us to care for ourselves and loved ones, as well as make a living. The hands of a child assist him in exploring his environment. The athlete depends on his hands to complete a pass, pitch a ball, or return a serve. The hands play a significant factor in our ability to perform our daily roles. When injury occurs to our hands, our lifestyle is altered temporarily or even permanently. As one might expect in the variety of tasks that may be performed with the hand, it is a complex mechanism. Optimal treatment of hand injuries requires specialized skills that are provided by the team at The Lipscomb Clinic Hand Center. Treatment of hand conditions, both surgical and non-surgical, cross multiple treatment lines. Techniques that are used in other surgical specialties are applied to restore hand function, including skin and soft tissue reconstruction or grafting, microvascular surgery, nerve repair, and joint replacement of the hand and elbow. Reconstructive surgery is also frequently performed to restore lost function as a result of damaged tendons and nerves, or because of diseases affecting the function of the hand. Treatment is directed by the hand surgeon who must have the knowledge to treat a vast array of disorders of the hand, wrist and upper extremities, including: congenital abnormalities, and fractures, degenerative and arthritic problems, nerve injuries, and nerve compression problems, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, and tumors of the hand or upper extremity. The surgeon is assisted by a health care team in providing optimal patient care. Occupational therapists receive specialized training in the evaluation and treatment of upper extremity musculoskeletal injuries and conditions and work closely with the hand surgeons. They employee rehabilitation techniques and specialized splinting in order to restore hand function.
