David M. Schmidt, M.D.
Dr. Schmidt specializes in surgery
of the hand and upper extremity. He is a 1983 graduate of the University of Kentucky
College of Medicine where he ranked first in his class of 104. He completed a
residency in orthopaedic surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and
also completed a fellowship in hand surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in
Washington, D.C.
Dr. Schmidt is board certified in
orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with additional
certification for surgery of the hand.
He is a member of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. The
intricacy and microscopic detail that are the essence of hand surgery attracted him to his
chosen subspecialty, along with the fact that hand surgery requires skill in both
orthopaedic and plastic surgery.
Dr. Schmidt believes that restoring
a person to his or her previous level of function comes through a coordinated effort
between the patient and physician. He encourages his patients to ask questions and
learn as much as possible about their conditions, believing it will enable them to
participate more fully in decisions about their care.
He served in the U.S. Army, where
he received a Bronze Star Medal in 1991 for Exceptionally Meritorious Service during
Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He served as Chief of Hand Surgery at
William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Houston, Texas, from 1990 to 1993.
Dr. Schmidt's primary interest away
from work is his family. He and his wife have two children.
